Japan Highly Skilled Professional Visa Guide
高度専門職ビザ申請ガイド
Japan's Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa (高度専門職) is designed to attract top global talent with a points-based system. It offers significant benefits including a fast track to permanent residency — as little as 1 year with 80+ points.
Three Categories of HSP Visa
1. Advanced Academic Research Activities (高度学術研究活動)
- University professors, researchers
- R&D at public or private institutions
2. Advanced Specialized/Technical Activities (高度専門・技術活動)
- Engineers, IT specialists, scientists
- Working for companies in Japan
3. Advanced Business Management Activities (高度経営・管理活動)
- Business executives, managers
- Running or managing companies in Japan
Points Calculation System
You need 70 points or more to qualify. Points are awarded across these categories:
Academic Background (学歴)
| Qualification | Points |
|---|---|
| Doctoral degree | 30 |
| Master's degree | 20 |
| Bachelor's degree | 10 |
| Dual degrees (multiple fields) | +5 |
Professional Experience (職歴)
Experience points depend on which of the three HSP fields you apply under.
| Years of Experience | Academic Research | Professional / Technical | Business Management |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10+ years | 15 | 20 | 25 |
| 7-9 years | 15 | 15 | 20 |
| 5-6 years | 10 | 10 | 15 |
| 3-4 years | 5 | 5 | 10 |
Annual Salary (年収)
| Salary (JPY) | Points |
|---|---|
| 10M+ | 40 |
| 9M-10M | 35 |
| 8M-9M | 30 |
| 7M-8M | 25 (under 40 only) |
| 6M-7M | 20 (under 40 only) |
| 5M-6M | 15 (under 35 only) |
| 4M-5M | 10 (under 30 only) |
| Under 4M | 0 |
A salary below ¥4M earns no points, and ¥3M is the minimum annual salary the ISA requires for the professional/technical and business-management fields regardless of your score. Bonuses (賞与) count toward annual salary; commuting, housing and overtime allowances do not.
Age (年齢)
| Age | Points |
|---|---|
| Under 30 | 15 |
| 30-34 | 10 |
| 35-39 | 5 |
| 40+ | 0 |
Bonus Points (加算ポイント)
| Criteria | Points |
|---|---|
| Research achievements | 15-25 |
| Japanese language (JLPT N1) | 15 |
| Japanese language (JLPT N2) | 10 |
| Graduated from Japanese university | 10 |
| Graduated from top-ranked university | 10 |
| Investment in Japan (100M+ yen) | 5 |
| Qualifying certifications | 5-10 |

Application Process
Step 1: Calculate Your Points
Use the official points calculation sheet to determine your score. You must provide documentation for every claimed point.
Step 2: Prepare Documents
- Application form — Certificate of Eligibility or Change of Status form
- Points calculation sheet with supporting evidence for each item
- Passport and Residence Card (if in Japan)
- Employment contract or appointment letter
- Academic certificates (degree certificates, transcripts)
- Work experience certificates from all previous employers
- Tax certificate — not on the HSP(i) list; the ISA asks for tax and pension records when you later apply for HSP(ii) or permanent residence
- Company documents — Registration, financial statements
Step 3: Submit Application
- From abroad: Your employer applies for a Certificate of Eligibility at the local Immigration Bureau
- From Japan: Apply for Change of Status at the Immigration Bureau with jurisdiction over your residence
Step 4: Receive Decision
Processing typically takes 1-3 months. HSP applications receive priority processing.
Processing Time
| Application Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| Certificate of Eligibility | 1-2 months (priority) |
| Change of Status | 2-4 weeks (priority) |
| Permanent Residency (80+ pts) | 3-6 months |
| Permanent Residency (70+ pts) | 4-8 months |
Common Mistakes
- Not documenting every point — Every claimed point needs supporting evidence
- Salary calculation errors — Annual salary means the pay you will receive from your employer including bonuses (賞与); reimbursement-type allowances (commuting, housing, dependants) and overtime pay do not count
- Forgetting language certificates — JLPT N1/N2 can add 10-15 critical points
- Outdated certificates — Some documents must be issued within 3 months
Path from HSP to Permanent Residency
| Points | Residence Required | Total Time to PR |
|---|---|---|
| 80+ | 1 year | ~1.5 years |
| 70-79 | 3 years | ~3.5 years |
| Standard | 10 years | ~10.5 years |
This makes HSP the most efficient path to permanent residency in Japan.
